Garden tips for June
In June, summer begins and with it the time when we use our gardens the most. To help you prevent unwanted ‘inhabitants’ in your garden, here are our tips for the summer season:
1. Box moth & other webbing caterpillars
As was to be expected given the weather so far, box moths and other web-spinning caterpillars are once again very much in evidence this year. The second generation of the year will hatch in June to feed on the shoots and leaves inside box trees, as well as on hedges and fruit trees.
Continuous spraying every 10 to 20 days with neem oil and Rimulgan significantly reduces the population and damage caused by the respective caterpillars. Neem oil and Rimulgan are non-toxic to the caterpillars' natural predators, such as house sparrows, great tits and wasps.
2. Autumn and grass mites
Due to the relatively high levels of humidity in many regions of Germany over the course of the year to date, autumn and grass mites are also present in excessive numbers. With the prospect of increasingly warm and dry periods, these tiny mites will once again cause unbearable itching for both humans and our pets.
Preventing grass mites in the garden
To prevent the little beasts, you should keep meadows and lawns short, sprinkle them with ground neem seeds and then water them well. Alternatively, you can also sprinkle neem press cake or spray neem oil & rimulgan. The neem active ingredients repel these animals. Heavily populated areas should ideally be treated every 4 to 6 weeks.
Keep grass mites away from people & relieve itching
Repellents containing neem oil, such as our Neol Human Protect or the skin oil Coco Niem, have proven to be an effective protection against mite bites when travelling or in the countryside. Even if you have already been bitten, cosmetic neem products can help to relieve the itching. We particularly recommend our Ayurveda skin cream Kailas Jeevan from India.
The products mentioned can also be used against other stinging and biting insects!
Keeping grass mites away from pets
Pets are not spared from the grass mite either. In this case, we recommend using NEOL Dog Deo or NEOL Coat Care Spray. Skin and fur that has already been affected can be treated with NEOL Neem Care Ointment or Neem Balm for pets.
By the way: we also offer Neol Deo Spray and Concentrate for horses!
3. Observe & prevent
In June, you should keep an eye on the activity of other typical pests and take action in good time: various types of aphids, scale insects, beetles (such as the weevil, which is now feeding on various shrubs) and also caterpillars (which can now develop into a plague).
Our Mehltau Kombipack Plus is a very good choice for most of these problems! In addition to neem oil and Rimulgan, it also contains the plant strengthening agent Lebermooser and the basic substance sodium bicarbonate. When used together, these components not only help against voracious insects, but also against dreaded fungal diseases and bacterial infections.
Tip on how often to use it:
- The warmer and damper the climate, the more often the application should be repeated.
- If it is cool and dry, 1 to 2 applications in June are sufficient.
- If it is warm and humid, however, you should apply it 3 to 4 times.
